This podcast is not simply a tribute to one of the most prolific and powerful preachers in the history of the church. It is a desire to see sermons used so powerfully by the Spirit to touch lives and transform hearts to bear fruit in a new generation in deep need of truth and love. Each episode I want to bring a new sermon or writing to life, and in doing so share what has been powerful and helpful teachings to life for those who would hear about them.
I was introduced to Spurgeon as one who, though he battled against crippling depression during his life, endured through it to the glory not of himself, but to God. Many times in my own life when I look upon my unworthiness and wonder how God could ever deign to interest Himself in someone like me, someone so demonstrably low and sinful, I have been strengthened by reading Spurgeon’s works, and realizing that he was preaching to himself as much as to his readers. I hope I can impart even a bit of that sense to my listeners.
In all honesty, this is very much a work in progress and I expect that I will rework and expand this discussion in particular over time, as I see where God leads and learn what works and what doesn’t work.
I’d also like to note ahead of time, for the record, that my philosophy is to allow the original author to speak for himself. Charles Spurgeon was, like we all are, a man of his time. There are at times expressions and turns of phrase that are offensive to the modern ear, though they were not in that era. It is not my desire to excuse genuinely wrong attitudes, but nor is it my intent to bowdlerize the past. Spurgeon shall speak for Spurgeon, but every word of his is subject to correction and interpretation by Scripture, the sole infallible rule of our faith.
